Research Collaborations at the LDE Indonesia Centre
At the heart of the LDE Indonesia Centre lies a strong commitment to advancing research through long-term, interdisciplinary, and international collaboration. Together with leading Indonesian partners, the Centre supports projects that tackle pressing global and local challenges—ranging from climate change and digital innovation to health equity and biodiversity.
One of the Centre’s key initiatives is INUCoST (Indonesia–Netherlands Universities Consortium on Sustainable Futures), a formal partnership between the three LDE universities and five of Indonesia’s top institutions. Co-funded by the LDE Alliance and Indonesia’s Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), this consortium forms the backbone of our collaborative research efforts. Projects focus on the Indonesian government’s strategic priorities and include multi-university teams working on sustainable development in and around the new capital city, Nusantara.
Beyond INUCoST, the Centre is also forging impactful partnerships with public institutions such as PLN (Indonesia’s national electricity provider) and OIKN (Office of the New Capital of Nusantara). These agreements enable knowledge exchange, joint research, and capacity building in critical areas like energy transition and sustainable urban development.
Through these collaborations, the LDE Indonesia Centre connects scholars, students, and policymakers to co-create solutions for a more resilient and inclusive future. Whether through joint research, fieldwork-based education, or public engagement, our mission is to build bridges that turn academic insights into societal impact.
INUCoST
Shaping Sustainable Futures Through International Collaboration
INUCoST (Indonesia–Netherlands Universities Consortium on Sustainable Futures) is a strategic partnership between the LDE universities and five leading Indonesian universities. Together, we address key societal challenges through joint research and education in areas such as energy transition, digital technology, health, and heritage.
Current projects focus on Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, and explore smart city development, climate resilience, and biodiversity. A second research call will launch in 2025, expanding the collaboration to new themes and partners.
Collaboration with OIKN
Knowledge Partnership for Nusantara
In March 2024, the LDE Indonesia Centre formalised a partnership with OIKN (Office of the New Capital of Nusantara), establishing itself as a knowledge partner for Indonesia’s new capital. This collaboration focuses on advancing research and education related to sustainable urban development in Nusantara.
As a first milestone, LDE co-organised the international Forest City Conference in East Kalimantan, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of smart, green cities. Seven LDE researchers actively contributed as speakers and organisers, supported by the LDE Indonesia Centre.
Collaboration with PLN
Supporting Indonesia's Energy Transition
In 2024, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PLN, Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, to collaborate on advancing the country’s energy transition. This partnership focuses on capacity building through knowledge exchange, research, and practical training.
The cooperation includes developing tailored education and training programmes for PLN staff, as well as initiating joint research projects related to clean energy and energy governance. Together, LDE and PLN aim to contribute to a more sustainable, just, and resilient energy future for Indonesia.
