On 8 December 2015, a High Level formal dinner on Safety and Security was held, hosted by Member of European Parliament, Ms Cora van Nieuwenhuizen. The dinner, part of the 7th European Knowledge4Innovation Summit, was organized with the aim to actively engage researchers of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus University Alliance in a dialogue with politicians and policy makers. Last November 2015, the first edition of the CEL Academic Teaching Lab was organised. During this two-day event, twelve teachers from the universities of Leiden, Delft and Erasmus Rotterdam worked on innovating their education.

The building of Holland Particle Therapy Centre reached its highest point on January 28th. The new proton therapy clinic, built next to the RID, is a collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus MC and LUMC. Holland PTC is the first treatment center for proton therapy in the Netherlands. As from mid-2017 approximately 600 cancer patients can be treated annually.

Erasmus University Rotterdam, Leiden University, Delft University of Technology have taken the initiative for a new mastertrack Governance of Migration and Diversity. The inter-university mastertrack, which starts on September 2016, focuses on how policy, politics and organizations deal with migration and diversity.

On 14 January a second group of 23 professionals started the executive Master’s programme Cyber Security at the HSD Campus. The first cohort, which started in January 2015, has just finished a first inspiring year and entered their second year of this multidisciplinary academic programme.

The international pharmaceutical company Grünenthal opens an innovation hub in the Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP). The LBSP is part of Medical Delta, the medical-technological consortium of the three universities, the Erasmus MC, and the Leiden University Medical Centre. By opening this innovation hub scientists and drug developers can work together even better.

A safe and secure Europe requires close co-operation between all parties, in both the public and private sectors: ‘Brussels’, national and local government bodies, knowledge institutions, businesses of all sizes, and citizens. The cooperation can be far-reaching, and will not exclude unorthodox parties such as ‘ethical hackers’ or former extremists. Leiden-Delft-Erasmus-academics, MEPs, staff of the European Commission and various other stakeholders discussed matters of safety and security at the 7th European Innovation Summit.
