Universities in Living Labs working on climate and biodiversity

How much does which type of tree evaporate, can space data be used for nature conservation, what can we learn from a small forest along the A13 and how do we restore the relationship between people and soil health?

Suzanne van den BoschThis is what the four new projects funded by the Climate and Biodiversity programme, a collaboration of Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities, are about. Suzanne van den Bosch recently started as coordinator of this new program. What is her goal for this year?

Van den Bosch: 'The four projects have just started through seed money funding. We want to stimulate scientific research and education in Living Labs on the theme of climate and biodiversity.'

'Another goal is to further expand our network, not only with scientists but also with social partners, such as municipalities and regional initiatives.'

Interaction

The starting point of the programme is the interaction between climate and biodiversity. For example, global warming has consequences for species diversity and the decline of nature has an effect on the climate.

To better understand this, Delft engineers – from civil engineering, for example – are now working together with Leiden ecologists from the Institute of Environmental Sciences. Legal and economic knowledge is then brought in from Rotterdam. The white paper 'Connect climate and biodiversity' was published on this subject last year  .

Kick off 5 june 2025

Van den Bosch: 'We have connections in all three universities and would like more people to join in to strengthen the programme. On June 5, the kick-off of the new projects will take place and we will get to work in workshops. Scientists who want to be part of this or join our network can email me.' s.j.m.van.den.bosch@cml.leidenuniv.nl

The four Climate and Biodiversity Seed Fund projects will run until May 2026. Read more about the content and the participating researchers here.

Walk along in the new nature on the TU Delft campus

TU Delft has been investing in making the campus more sustainable for years, including stimulating nature and biodiversity.

On Thursday 22 May 2025, the UN Day of Biodiversity, TU Delft is organising walks on campus, where the various nature impulses can be seen. Sign up via the link below.
