After years of intensive preparation, the construction of the Holland Particle Therapy Centre (HollandPTC), the first proton therapy clinic in the Netherlands, was initiated on 6 May.
HollandPTC is an important initiative of a consortium consisting of LUMC, Erasmus MC and TU Delft. With the construction of this Centre, proton therapy will become available to cancer patients in the Netherlands by mid-2017.
Proton therapy is more focused than regular radiation therapy, enabling treatment in hard-to-reach areas and reducing the severity of side effects. In addition to treating cancer patients with protons, HollandPTC is also focused on ground-breaking clinical-scientific and technological research and education.
