Workshop/Design Studio Atlantikwall South-Holland 2023

Are you interested in heritage and, in particular, in the role of heritage in our current society? We are organizing an interdisciplinary workshop for Leiden-Delft-Erasmus students about the contested heritage of the Atlantikwall in South Holland. We are looking for BA or MA students from different courses to join.

Background workshop/design studio

Every year, a number of universities and the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Center for Global Heritage organize a student workshop on a current spatial heritage issue. The students come from different studies, especially landscape architecture, history, archaeology and heritage studies. They work intensively in small interdisciplinary groups to answer a question from the heritage field in a four-day session. The students use a spatial design process as a powerful tool to analyze the problem and propose solutions. The end result consists of a number of visual designs with textual explanations that propose different solutions in a creative and concise way.

The workshop/design workshop around the Atlantic Wall in 2023

The province of South Holland is the commissioner for this workshop and is working with the municipalities of The Hague, Katwijk and (hopefully) Noordwijk. The main research questions are at the intersection of spatial heritage and major contemporary social challenges:

• How can the remains of the Atlantikwall in South Holland be used to tackle major social challenges such as climate change, housing, biodiversity and inclusiveness?

• What story do we want to tell with the Atlantikwall in the future and how are we going to do this using the physical remains in the public space?
