On behalf of the Executive Board of the Centre for BOLD Cities, Prof. dr. Liesbet van Zoonen (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Prof. dr. Jaap van den Herik (Leiden University) and Dr. Alexander Koutamanis (Delft University of Technology), we would like to invite you for the BOLD Cities Talk. For this first edition we've invited professor Van de Walle from TU Delft to talk about the need for data when it comes to humanitarian aid.
Urban Disasters: the Impact of Data on Disaster Relief
Prof. Dr. Bartel van de Walle, Delft University of Technology
Abstract: When we hear ‘emergency aid’, most of us initially think of medical assistance, food and shelter. However, the large amount of information that is available nowadays is having an increasingly greater impact on the effectiveness of relief efforts. We could indeed go as far as to say that the provision of information should be a human right. During this talk, I will discuss about how data impact disaster relief in the context of urban disasters and the open research and technical challenges that can be still addressed in this area.
Speaker: Prof. Bartel van de Walle is chair and professor of Policy Analysis in the department of Multi Actor Systems of Delft University of Technology. He is also senior fellow of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative research center and founding president of the Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM) society. He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Ghent University.
