Every year, NWO awards the Vidi grants to researchers from Dutch research institutions. This year, the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities and UMCs received 40 of the 149 grants. The research projects awarded funding cover a broad spectrum of research, from medicine to engineering, humanities and social sciences.
A Vidi grant is a maximum of 850,000 euros. This allows researchers to develop their own innovative line of research and set up their own research group. Vidi, together with Veni and Vici, is part of the NWO Talent Programme.
Leiden University
The Leiden researchers (excl. LUMC) received nine Vidi grants for a variety of subjects in the humanities, linguistics, law and physics. Examples:
- Dr. H.T. Wermink – Criminal Law and InequalityInvestigates how successive sanctions in criminal law affect people's life courses and can strengthen or reduce inequality. (Social Sciences/Law)
- Dr. B.J. Hensen – Quantum gravity in the labCreates quantum superposition of small objects to test whether gravity itself has a quantum character. (Physics / Quantum Technology)
All Vidi grants at Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Center
Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC)
The LUMC projects, awarded 4 Vidi grants, focus strongly on medical imaging, immunotherapy and infectious diseases. For example:
- Dr. L. Hirschler – Making brainwashing visibleDevelops MRI techniques to monitor how brains clean themselves and what that says about aging and neurodegeneration. (Medicine / Neuroscience)

Delft University of Technology
Delft received no fewer than sixteen Vidi grants, for research ranging from quantum technology to sustainable infrastructure and inclusive biomechanics. These proposals include:
- Dr. M. Khosla – PriXAIs explainable, privacy-conscious algorithms that can be applied responsibly in the healthcare and public sector. (Computer Science / Artificial Intelligence)
- Dr. E. van der Kruk – Inclusive BiomechanicsBuilds sex-specific musculoskeletal simulations to better understand injuries and performance differences. (Technical Medicine / Biomechanics)
Erasmus University Rotterdam
The seven Rotterdam Vidi grants cover social sciences, history, economics and educational research. This concerns research such as:
- Dr. J.M. Wittmayer – Academia in TransitionExplores how universities can adapt their structures to promote societal impact and collaboration. (Public Administration / Innovation Studies)
- Prof. E. Kantorowicz-Reznichenko – Income-Dependent Fines (JUSTFINES)Analyzes how income-related fines can lead to fairer and more effective punishment policies. (Economics / Law)
All Vidi grants at Erasmus University Rotterdam
Erasmus MC
Rotterdam medical research has been awarded four Vidi grants and focuses on projects on prevention, genetics and health inequalities. One of the projects concerns:
- Dr. F.J. Wolters – SHINOBI-II: Understanding silent cerebral infarctionsStudies the biological mechanisms behind 'silent' strokes to enable early diagnosis and prevention. (Medicine / Clinical Neurology)
