International Centre for Frugal Innovation

Frugal innovations are new design and marketing strategies that put high-quality products and services that have been simplified and adapted to local circumstances within reach of the ‘bottom of the pyramid’ and the new middle-class in emerging economies.

The International Centre for Frugal Innovation studies the conditions under which frugal innovation can succeed and contribute to sustainable, inclusive development. A theoretical framework is combined with experimental projects in the field, which also involve Dutch, multi-national, and local companies and stakeholders. These experiments have a dual objective: to develop working, marketable innovations, but also to provide input for theories concerning frugal innovation and development.
