Invitation Staff Colloquium TU Delft
HollandPTC: a new treatment for cancer, founded by Erasmus MC, LUMC and TU Delft
by Marco van Vulpen & Dennis Schaart

Holland Proton Therapy Centre (HollandPTC) is an independent polyclinic centre for proton therapy, scientific research and education, established by Erasmus MC, LUMC and TU Delft. In the Netherlands it is one of the three places where patients can receive a proton treatment. The treatment can be used in specific cases, for example when a tumor is located near vulnerable organs. It is a form of radiation where protons are aimed directly at the tumor, leaving the surrounding tissue with as little as possible damage. Holland PTC started this year with the treatment of its first patients. Meanwhile, HollandPTC cooperates with many different parties such as universities, hospitals, patient associations and health insurers on research to gain more knowledge on which forms of cancer are best suited for proton therapy, how treatment can be made more cost efficient and how the treatment can be further improved.

On the speakers:

Marco van Vulpen is the Medical Director at HollandPTC  since 2016, he is also appointed as professor at LUMC, Erasmus MC, and TU Delft. His research is mostly focused on development and clinical introduction of new radiotherapy techniques, like MRI acceleration and proton therapy,  especially in the context of determining the clinical value. Marco will introduce HollandPTC to us in a broader sense, he will elaborate on its establishment, the principles of proton therapy and the complex network it (co)operates in.

Dennis Schaart is head of Medical Physics and Technology that falls under the Radiation Science & Technology department at TU Delft. His research mission is to develop better methods and technologies for the personalized diagnosis and treatment of disease, focusing on radiation-based approaches in medical imaging, radiation oncology, and image-guided intervention. Dennis will go deeper into the involvement of the TU Delft in HollandPTC.

On Staff Colloquia:
Staff Colloquia are organized by the Directorate of Strategic Development at TU Delft since 2015. They are held by internal experts, usually a portfolio holder or project leader. The purpose of those colloquia is to elaborate on internal administrative affairs; it always concerns ongoing projects and initiatives in which TU Delft is involved. Participants get an insight in projects that recently occurred on the agenda of the Executive Board and they are given the opportunity to discuss the topic with the project leaders. The Staff Colloquia are organised on Thursdays from 15:30 to 17:00 and include drinks.
